I lost it for real, but I also didn’t really lose it at all

There’s a moment in King David’s story when the enemy kidnapped his and his comrades’ families while they were away from the city (First Book of Samuel, chapter 30, NET translation):

“When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned with fire, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep.”

But then we read that David strengthened himself in God, led his people on a raid after the enemy, they cut them to the ground, and rescued their families back. Now there’s this line that really got me:

“Nothing was missing, whether small or great (…)”

NOTHING was missing.
Wow. How many times I thought I lost something for good, but God allowed me to rescue all of it. Yes — there was a real moment of loss. Just like with their families. But God organized the rescue and brought everything back.

Did I lose something?
It’s true to say yes.
But it’s also true to say I didn’t — because God brought it all back.
